THE BOAT

The Boat :

Freedom 2 is an extremely spacious, exceptionally stable oceangoing vessel constructed with superior finishes and expert craftsmanship. Being a catamaran, she is as comfortable and roomy as a mono-hull 50% longer in length but not subject to the constant pitching and rolling motions mono-hulls experience at anchor and at sea.

Inside, she has been carefully laid out for high-end surf charters. Amenities include 4 guest cabins each with single berths, a spacious airconditioned saloon, large wraparound sofa with 360 degree sea view, and a 42” Plasma T.V.
Exterior areas provide plenty of comfortable shaded spots to relax, check out the surf, eat, drink, etc, both in the cockpit and up on the flybridge. At night the cockpit can be closed in with canvas, combining it with the saloon to create one large space to kick back in.

The yacht’s fuel capacity gives her an approximate range of 2,000 nautical miles at an average cruising speed of an exceptional 12 knots. This allows Freedom 2’s expert skipper/guide and you to explore out of the way areas in the north and south Mentawai more easily and more quickly than most other boats. It also means that your pre-arranged trips to the North Sumatran Island chains are well within range and time constraints.

The Crew :

Charters aboard Freedom 2 will be guided by Captain Darren Stockwell who has over 5 years of experience sailing and surf guiding in Sumatra. Darren is well liked and respected in the region and his knowledge and keenness for surf combined with Freedom 2's speed means you will quickly find the waves you want and maximize your surf time.
Captain Darren also offers an exceptionally high quality photo service for a reasonable fee. Instead of worrying about getting the perfect shot, spend your time surfing and relaxing while your captain does the photography both in the surf and amongst the local scenery on land and on the boat.

The Food:
When it comes to chow time your western chef will dish up restaurant quality meals consisting of a mix of high standard Western and Asian cuisine, often including the fresh fish you just caught.

The Mentawai Islands are one of the most consistent surf destinations in the world. It's broad exposure towards the vast, southern Indian Ocean provides these islands with remarkable consistency and quality. During the dry season, from late April to early November, the Indian Ocean is a powerful groundswell producing machine. During this time, surf charters offer curious surfers the opportunity to score the best waves of their lives. The Mentawai Islands are located approximately 100 miles off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia's northern most and largest island, and the port city of Padang, launching point for Mentawai surf charters. There are 4 main islands in the archipelago, with numerous smaller islands surrounding these, many lined up perfectly to catch the swells from the Indian Ocean.

THE LOCATION

Mentawaii Islands
The Mentawai Island chain lies roughly 100 miles offshore from the largest city in West Sumatra, Padang, which is the base for all Mentawai charter operations. The island group consists of the four main islands of Siberut, Sipora, and North and South Pagai. These islands are further surrounded by many smaller islets, the entire chain stretching from North to SouthEast in a line wide open to the Indian Ocean swell factory.

The Mentawai are inhabited by local fishermen whose villages dot the islands. They are friendly and welcoming, and visits to their beaches and communities are highly recommended for a full Mentawai experience. The indigenous cultures, clear blue waters, dense tropical backdrops, and sultry trade winds provide for a truly idyllic island experience.

The Climate
There are two main seasons in the Mentawai: the dry season, which runs from around February to October, and the wet season, which takes up November to January. While the wet season is certainly rainier, one will experience plenty of refreshing tropical showers in the dry season as well. Average air temperatures range between 72°F (22°C) to 90°F (32°C). Water temp runs a pretty constant 80°F (27°C). Wetsuits are never necessary, but tropical wax is always required!

Getting to the Mentawai is quite a journey for most people. Some of you will be traveling half way around the world to get here. After a long flight from home, you will arrive in Padang, Indonesia, most likely via Singapore or Jakarta, and will be greeted at the airport by one of the Freedom team.

After introductions and a quick briefing, you and your gear will be transported to a comfortable location to have some refreshments and unwind from your long trip while the boat is prepared for your arrival.
