Mentawai Surf Resort
Private island surf resort, right in the middle of the best surf spots in the Mentawai.
The traditional bungalow resort is built on Siloinak, a small palm covered private island situated 3 kilometres south of the main island of Siberut. The resort comprises twelve bungalows, each sleeping two guests and a main lodge with the common facilities. The village resort was entirely built by the Mentawai people, according to their traditional methods. No concrete or steel to break the harmony and beauty of the environment.

The bungalows are spaced out in a large flower garden so as to preserve guests’ privacy, and look out to the sea a few metres away. They accommodate 2 guests each and are provided with pillows, sheets, mosquito nets and bathroom towels. The are eight showers with hot water in the main building. The large “Uma”, the traditional Mentawai long house, offers a spacious living area for eating and partying, with splendid views over the lagoon. The resort takes great care of the quality of the food served and a professional cook with wide experience in top Indonesian hotel prepares the meals, base on fresh produces from the islands and freshly caught fish barbecued on the beach. Lunch are taken onboard next to the surfspots but dinner is quite a serious affair - the owner is French !

Everything at this resort combines to make your stay a heavenly experience, from the quality of the food to the coconut-fringed beaches and shaded lagoon of emerald water, not to mention surf, surf and surf ... with some world class breaks at your doorstep.

The resort will take you every day by speedboat to the best surf spots of the day according to swell, tides and wind. There are 21 of the most consistent waves in the world in a 30 minute radius from the island. Some of the best known are E Bay, Buergerworld, Beng-Beng, Bankvaults, Hideaway, 4 Bobs, A Framers or Kandui.

During the dry season, from late April to early November, the Indian Ocean is a powerful groundswell producing machine. During this time, surf charters offer curious surfers the opportunity to score the best waves of their lives. The Mentawai Islands are located approximately 100 miles off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia's northern most and largest island, and the port city of Padang, launching point for Mentawai surf charters. There are 4 main islands in the archipelago, with numerous smaller islands surrounding these. The recent discovery of world-class surf in the Mentawai archipelago and subsequent exposure of images of the region in international surf media has pushed the archipelago to the brink of an explosion of surfing tourism development. Foreign tourism operators in the area are, however, aware of the potential for negative impacts upon the local environment, culture, social fabric, and economy if tourism is allowed to develop unchecked. For this reason, attempts are being made from within the surfing tourism industry, as well as from local government, to manage surfing tourism development. In an effort to minimise the exploitation of this sovereign area and to build sustainable tourism, surf travel is nearly completely restricted to authorised surf charter companies.
