Sarania is majority owned by Matt Cruden of Mangalui Ndulu (famous Sumatran charter boat). Matt will be instumental in the
operation of Sarania and work with Skipper and crew to ensure guests receive the same renowned 'Mangalui' service.
Matt's years of experience in the Mentawais is held in high regard by his peers and therefore 'Sarania' will be well respected in Mentawai waters.

THE BOAT
M.V. SARANIA, is a seventeen metre, offshore custom-built steel-hulled and twin-engined surfing and pleasure vessel, with luxury open plan accommodation for up to eight passengers in air-conditioned comfort.
She was custom-built specifically for long distance cruising and with her incredible range of 1,000 nautical miles, allows her to explore Indonesia and the incredible surfing locations in West Sumatra.
The owners of M.V. SARANIA are both very experienced in catering to surfers in Indonesia. Sarania’s captain, Russell, has had 10 years experience throughout Asian waters from New Guinea in the East to Thailand in the West. His Aussie decky/surf guide is a good surfer from Wamberal beach on the Central Coast and has had several years experience in the Mentawai's. On top of this, Saranya and other boats communicate daily via HF radio and telephone regarding swell reports and current weather conditions and where the crowds are. This ensures passengers on both boats have the very best chance of scoring great, uncrowded waves.
Built in 1994 and with a complete refit in 1999, she is fitted with all navigation and safety equipment and with all the aids and necessities for your every comfort. A full complement of equipment is listed in the inventory with the vessel description.

THE LOCATION
The Mentawai
The Mentawai Islands are located approximately 100 miles off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia's northern most and largest island, and the port city of Padang, launching point for Mentawai surf charters. There are 4 main islands in the archipelago, with numerous smaller islands surrounding these. The recent discovery of world-class surf in the Mentawai archipelago and subsequent exposure of images of the region in international surf media has pushed the archipelago to the brink of an explosion of surfing tourism development. Foreign tourism operators in the area are, however, aware of the potential for negative impacts upon the local environment, culture, social fabric, and economy if tourism is allowed to develop unchecked. For this reason, attempts are being made from within the surfing tourism industry, as well as from local government, to manage surfing tourism development. In an effort to minimise the exploitation of this sovereign area and to build sustainable tourism, surf travel is nearly completely restricted to authorised surf charter companies.
