Surfing is a year round practice in Panama, be it on the Pacific or Caribbean Coast. There are numerous spots on both coasts, but the most consistent and famous one is Santa Catalina, on the Pacific Coast in the Gulf of Montijo. Another excellent surf destination on the Pacific is Morro Negrito, on Isla Ensenada in the Gulf of Chiriqui, near the border with Costa Rica. On the Caribean coast, the rising surf spot is the fabulous Bocas del Toro archipelago, also near the border with Costa Rica. The climate is tropical year round with two seasons, the dry and wet season. In the Pacific Coast, the dry season lasts from December through April, when warm winds blowing offshore 24 hours a day. Surf wise, the waves are smaller but the wind offshore. The wet season last from April to November and is referred to as the winter ! But the air and water temperatures remain tropical. Surf wise, the swell is also much more consistent, showers more frequent and the wind inshore. On the Caribbean coast, the best surf season is from December to March. No wet suits are necessary, but surfing shoes are indispensable as waves break on the coral reef ! A surf trip to Costa Rica can perfectly be combined with neighbouring Costa Rica, with numerous and excellent surf spots.
