Due to it's geographical location west of the Iberian peninsula and facing the Atlantic, Portugal is blessed with excellent surf and some serious swells throughout most of the year. You can drive all the way down the coast , from the northern border with Spain to the southern border of Spain in Algarve, along 600 kilometers of surfing paradise, with open beach breaks and concealed bays. The whole coast is teaming with unknown surf spots. You don't even have to go very far from the famous and crowded beaches around Porto, Lisbon or in the Algarve to find yourself nearly alone with possibly an even better wave than crowded surf spots five minutes down the road.

The best swells come in late winter early spring, but there are good waves all year round to surf. Peniche, north of Lisbon, has one of the most consistant swell in Europe, and is famous for its Supertubos perfect tube. Another Portuguese surfing mecca is Ericeira, between Lisbon and Peniche, known for its Coxos break. South of Lisbon, halfway between the capital and the Algarve, Sines is another top surfing spot on a wild stretch of coast. The best surfing area year round is probably the southern tip of the Algarve, as waves break both on the Southern and Western coasts, always providing a surf alternative according to the swell and within a maximum thirty minute drive. The Algarve is also the warmest place in Portugal and the most touristic one, with plenty of night live and attractions.
