Sao Juliao Surfcamp is located in the historical Village of Cortesia, surrounded by the beautifull natural park of Sintra and close to Ericeira, a traditional fishing village and Portugal’s surfing Mecca, internationally renowned as one of the best surfing spots in Europe. This new kind of Surfcamp in Europe develops 4 diferents areas: a huge Surfhouse, a private farm (with a multitude of animals, production of fruits, vegetables and cereals and HOME MADE WINE...), a grocery - coffee shop, and last but not least, a private Surfshool.

CAMP
The SurfHouse
The Surfhouse “Maria da Saude” is a traditional 200 year old Portuguese country house. But don’t worry, it has already suffered 2 recoveries, this last one gave place to 5 rooms composed by 2 suites (private Double bed with w.c) and 3 rooms (2 individual beds in each room). The Surfhouse also has 2 bathrooms, lots of space within, a living room (tv, dvd, wifi, play station), kitchen and a backyard with sea sight at 300 metres. All the original architecture of the house was kept as it was previously.
The Farm
Cochos Farm is composed by 3 agricultural areas; the animals, the vegetables/fruits/cereals and the wines.
The animals space is composed by cows, pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits, hens, chickens and some birds. Their feeding has a base of sustainable agriculture. This area is right next to the Surfhouse.
The vegetables space is composed by fruits, cereals, wheat, maize, barley and oats. This production serves food for the animals and it is located inland of Cortesia and Assafora in a total of 5 hectares.
The fruits are the agricultural production with little relief of the farm, but with great quality like the strawberries and melons and cantaloupes.
The vegetables are very fresh and of excellent quality. They have no chemical products whatsoever. In this cultivation you will find lettuces, tomatoes, potatoes, broccoli, onions and garlic among others.
The wines are a family tradition which have been passed on from generation to generation, always with the same taste and passion for the vine.
There are truly pure red wines with excellent quality, very good to follow with the meat from the farm. The white wines are a true delight to follow with the fish and shellfish from the local coast.
Our vine area is about 1 hectare; this production is destined only for internal consumption in our commercial establishments.
Grocery and Coffee shop “Cortesia”
The Grocery and coffee shop “Cortesia” is situated about 100m from the farm and from the house, where you can get regional products, the best fruits and varied ecological products from the same farm.
THE SURF
The Surfschool:
The Surfschool is located on the Sao Juliao beach, one of the best beachbreaks in Sintra and Ericeira. The School offers Guided tours to the best spots in the area for the most experienced Surfers, while providing Surf Lessons at the beach for the beginners.
Surf Spots:
Ericeira is Portugal’s surfing Mecca, internationally renowned as one of the best surfing spots in Europe. Since 1985 it has played host to the ASP (WQS) world championship. Ericeira boasts some of the best waves in Portugal .But world class spots in the area are the famous Coxos, a totally epic right hander reef break, and Pedra Blanca reef break in Ericeira, one of the few left handers in the region.
The Beach:
The golden sands, the pure Atlantic waters and the coastline with magnificent cliffs turn the Sintra beaches into real pleasure spots. Besides bathing and the radiant summer sun, the Sintra beaches also afford superb conditions for water sports, while the cliffs provide paragliding lovers with excellent jumping ramps. Fishing, surfing and body-board are among the sports most commonly practiced along the Sintra coastline.
Sao Julião Beach
With its 2 km, São Julião is the largest beach in the Ericeira area. It’s one of the best beaches of Sintra and Ericeira, has a beach break about 2km, the land is beautiful as well and has 70m height. The beach is good to surf and fishing, it has 2 bars, a Surf School which is part of S Julião Surfcamp and still it has the Historical Village of S Julião, where the habitations cannot be commercialized, passing from generation to generation.
Samarra beach
Samarra beach is about 1,5 km of Cortesia, beautiful and full of history due to its natural beauty and to its Azenha. The beach is small, but in the summer months is changed into a true swimming pool of natural rock, which is recommended by doctors to heal rheumatic illnesses due to its high iodine content from the seaweed and rocks.

THE LOCATION
S Julião Surfcamp is located in the historical Village of Cortesia,in natural parquet Sintra Cascais about 2 km from S Julião Beach which is one of the best beaches of Ericeira.
Cortesia
The Village that nowadays has the name of Cortesia, in the ancient days was called “Old Cocks”, history tells us that when the King passed by these lands and questioned the local people what was the name, and so they told him to what he answered “there shall be courtesy” and that's how it started to call Cortesia.
Ericeira
Ericeira itself is a charming little town with whitewashed houses, accented with painted frames, lining narrow streets. Ericeira is also ideally located halfway between Peniche to the north and Lisbon to the south, both less than a one hour drive. Avisit to the Portuguese capital is a must. Other primer sightseeing in the area include the Mafra Palace and Sintra. Modelled after the famous El Escorial in Madrid, Mafra Palace is an architectural work of extraordinary grandeur and majesty built in the 18th Century by King Joao V. Portugal's largest building, the project was so big that a small town was built just to house the workers! The palace houses over 800 rooms rooms looking out onto the gardens through some 4,500 doorways and windows.
Sintra
Further south towards Lisbon, the resort town of Sintra shelters inland at the foot of the Serra da Sintra and was long favoured by the Portuguese Royalty and the English aristocracy as a summer destination. The small town is located in a thickly wooded setting, with lush gardens, old palaces and villas with a ramshackle glamour. This stylish and romantic architectural complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A visit to the medieaval town Peniche, north of Ericeira, is also well worth your time, more so for being another reputed surf spot.
