SPO Surf Boards
Surfboards designed Jeff Bushman, Fabio Figuereido and Hugo Cartachana,
shaped by computerised machines.
SPO is joint venture between resident shapers and visiting
stars. The factory is located in the coastal town of Santa Cruz (North
of Lisbon, Portugal), between the famous spots of “Coxos”
and “Supertubos”. SPO works with the ultimate surf industry
technology: boards are designed by computers and shaped by machines, leaving
behind the traditional workshops.
Digital Surf Design is a computerised press shape and
cutter machine. Each shaper designs his board and these shapes are saved
in digital format, the computer giving instructions to the press shape
and cutter to produce the board. The shapers only have to supervise the
board production and apply the finishings to the nose and tail. SPO puts
emphasis on the glassing to get the best quality possible.
This new technology allows to produce identical boards as many times as
desired without loosing any of the shapers’ creative touch, as these
are supervising the process at all stages.
At present, shapers are Hugo Cartachana (Portugal), Fabio Figuereido (Brazil) and Jeff Bushman (Hawaii). Shapers stay at the factory during set periods of time each
year. The public will be informed on these dates so that they can order
a board from their favourite shaper.
