The Surf

The Surf

Rio De Janeiro is the Mecca of surfing in Brazil.  The Surfcamp ideal location in Rio is second to none, offering the likes of tropical beaches, uncrowded waves, and consistent swells year round.  There are several beautiful beach breaks to choose from, ranging from beginner to advanced depending on ability and experience.  Rio receives constant good swell from the southern seas as the coastline is facing due south and thanks to its wide southern swell window, there are always waves.

One of the most diverse cities in the world, Rio De Janeiro has a great atmosphere and beautiful beaches such as  Copacabana and Ipanema. But there is also another lesser known side to Rio still somewhat untouched and preserved, and Recreio is one of these untouched part that travellers have yet to discover. Locals know about it as a place where you can get away from the city and into a tropical paradise filled with palm trees, secluded bush walks and perfect waves. All of this only 40 minutes from Copacabana yet miles away from the fast pace and bustle of the city beaches.

Macumba-Recreio is also in in the middle of a surfing area with 7 famous surfspots. A short drive away are the secluded beaches of Prainha and Grumari, which have amazing jungle mountain backdrop and no real estate development in sight. On a hot weekend day, these are the favourite hangout beaches for surfers, famous actors, and Brazilian hot bodies ! Grumari is even the spot where the beach scene from the movie City of God was filmed. These are the safest, cleanest and most relaxed beaches around Rio.

Surf Lessons

All classes begin with stretching and warm up, so the students start to get in the mood. After that a thorough beach lesson begins so the students have a chance to listen to the instructor`s explanation and observe the demonstrations on land. Movements and techniques demonstrated by the instructor are repeated by the students so they can feel it themselves. This simulation prepares the students for getting into the water and controlling the board in the waves, paddling out, getting trough the surf and standing up.  Before getting in the water the instructor also describes the waves conditions for the day and points put rip currents and sand bars, so the students can be familiar to what is happening in the water at the spot they will be surfing.

Surfaris

This is perfect for the intermediate and experienced surfer wanting to get the most out of his days at the Surf Camp. Local surf guides will take you to the wave of the day and take you to beaches no “regular” transport reaches, including a river mouth that breaks epic with a big south swell. Your surf guide will tell you all about the spots: where to get in, currents and the type of wave you will be paddling out to, anything to give that advantage to a first timer on that break.

Shaping room & Surf shop

In association with one of the best shapers in Brazil, the Surfcamp has an on the spot Surf Shop with a shaping room. The surfshop offers brand new and used surfboards off the rack as well as a variety of surfgears that will get you in the water right away. If you want take advantage of the prices of surfboards in Brazil and avoid the hassle of checking them in on your flights, you can either pick a surf board from the rack at your arrival or pre-order a customised board and will have a “magic stick” just waiting for you.

Climate

Rio has a Tropical climate. Swell conditions and winds don’t mess with this area much as the beaches point in many directions so they work in all swell, plus if the wind comes up over the day you will find a spot off- shore or sheltered, a big plus if you are booked with a tight schedule.

In summer, the air temperature can reach around 32-42º C (90-100º F) while the water temperature average is around 22º C (78º F). Throughout the year, you can surf in board shorts the majority of the time, although a light wetsuit is recommended as the water can become a bit chilly with easterly swells. In winter, the water is similar yet the air temperature can be a bit a cooler due to cold fronts that come in with southerly swells.

Seasons are tropical with small variations:
  • Summer (December to February): Smaller ground swells - more crowds
  • Autumn (March to May): Good consistent swells - less crowds
  • Winter  (June to August): Bigger consistent swells - few crowds
  • Spring (September to November): Often raining yet good conditions prevail - less crowds

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro

A two minute walk from the beach, the surfcamp is located in the lively seaside resort of Recreio dos Bandeireantes, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There is a Shopping mall with many restaurants and a big supermarket just a 15 min walk away from the surfhouse. Night life in town consists basically of local bars and restaurants.

Commonly known as just Rio, Rio de Janeiro is the capital city of its namesake State, the second largest city of Brazil, and the third largest metropolitan area in South America. A natural port of the Guanabara Bay in Southeast Brazil, the city was founded by the Portuguese on January 1, 1502. They named it Rio de Janeiro (River of January), under the mistaken impression that the bay was an enormous river mouth. The city was the capital of Brazil for nearly two centuries during the Portuguese colonial era, and from 1822 to 1960 as an independent nation. It is also the former capital of the Portuguese Empire. Today, Rio remains the country's media capital, an important business centre and Brazil's key tourist destination.

Rio de Janeiro is an awe-inspiring city where impossibly steep granite mountains rise from the ocean between glorious stretches of golden sand. Brash skyscrapers vie for space with impeccable colonial buildings, and lush forests tumble down hillsides into densely populated residential areas. Its diverse cultures and peoples live in varying degrees of wealth or poverty. Rich exclusive areas stand in stark contrast and close proximity to the slum areas of the "favelas". But no matter what their background or economic standing are, the Cariocas (Rio's residents) are characterised by a passion and enthusiasm for life.

The "cidade maravilhosa" (marvellous city) revels in life and is famous for its natural settings carnival celebrations, Samba, Bossa Nova and its beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. Some of the most famous landmarks in addition to the beaches include the giant statue of Christ atop Corcovado mountain, Sugarloaf mountain (Pão de Açúcar) with its cable car, Sambódromo, a giant permanent parade stand used during Carnival, and Maracanã stadium, one of the world's largest football stadiums. Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Summer Olympics, becoming the first South American city to host the event and the second in Latin America after Mexico. The city also boasts the largest and second largest urban forests in the world: Floresta da Tijuca and the Pedra Branca State Park. Despite its charm and beauty, Rio is reputed to be one of the most violent cities in the world, but much of the violent crime is concentrated in the "favelas", or shantytowns, although sometimes it also spills into middle- and upper-income neighbourhoods.

The Trip

Recreio dos Bandeirantes

25 min. SE from Ipanema and Copacabana
Buses run regularly from Recreio (one block from the surfhouse) to the main areas of Rio city including Copacabana, Ipanema, Centro and others. Bus trip takes about one hour.

Rio de Janeiro International Airport (GIG), 45 min.

Major airlines with daily flights to other Brazilian airports

www.voegol.com.br
www.tam.com.br
www.oceanair.com.br

A word of caution here: Both San Paulo and Rio have more than one major airport. It is crucial to make sure your connecting flight leaves from the same airport your international flight arrives at. Experienced travellers caution against transferring between different airports.

Safety
Brazil as a whole is just as safe as any other places in the world. The area where the Surf camp is located is with no doubt the safest area in Rio de Janeiro city. You will be able to walk around at any time of the day with no hassle. Of course, few “safety tips” should be observed as not wearing fantasy items that will catch people’s attention or having your camera hanging down your chest.

Entry Visa
The citizens of most nations do not need a VISA to enter Brazil, however, we strongly recommend you to check with the Brazilian consulate in your country about the requirements to enter the country. On your arrival you will get a 90 days Tourist visa that will give you plenty of time to enjoy Brazil.

Money
The Brazilian currency is called the Real (Reais).
Most places will accept cards such as VISA and MASTER CARD. They are very easy to use, as ATM machines are located within supermarkets and gas stations. If you plan to bring cash, there are money exchange shops that will exchange your money at a good rate. Traveller checks are not so recommend as they are quite hard to be exchanged.

Local transportation
The bus system in Rio de Janeiro is efficient and easy with many buses available at different schedules and routes.  Taxis are easy and affordable. We can organise taxis pick ups from the camp if needed. Car rentals are available as well, and if you want to extend you time on Brazil and travel around this beautiful area we will be able to help you.

Hey Dudes
me and a friend of mine had been to the camp and had a really really great time there. The atmosphere in the camp was so relaxed and the guys were so nice (Maro & Katharina). Also the sessions i had with the team were very important for me and my surf-future ;-)
but the thing we liked most, was the place where the camp is settled. there we saw from brasil what we wanned to see but felt always safe.
so if you book a trip to this camp, you won't regret.
greets from austria, andi

Perfect location for the surf near the most beautiful beaches of Rio like Pranha and Grumari, landscapes are gorgeous !!! I am intermediate surfer and this place is really the best one I did for learning and improving my surf. It is adapted for everyone from the beginner until the more advanced surfer. Concerning the surf camp, it is really a nice place in a quiet neighbourhood where you can walk at any time of the day or the night without any security problem. I had the feeling to be in a small village. Furthermore Mauro and Katrina are very friendly, always ready to share their knowledge of surf with you. In a nutshell good place to stay not so far from the mains tourists spots of Rio like Ipanema, Sugar Loaf, Cristo Redentor,... easy to go there with the bus and very cheap.

Hey Nomadsurfers,

Just wanted to let you know that the camp in Rio was absolutely amazing. After travelling round South America for 6 months it was the perfect way for me to finish the trip.

Thought the location of the camp was brilliant and the property was lovely - huge garden and awesome outdoor eating area where a lovely breakfast was served (with amazing coffee!!).

Have stayed at a few camps before but thought I'd take a minute to give feedback this time because Katrina and Mauro were not only great teachers in the water - they also really went out of their way to make sure me (and the other guys staying) had a great time and got the most out of the area.

I was a bit hesitant about doing a camp in Rio as I thought it would be really touristy but this was the total opposite.

cheers.

Chloe.

I am writing just to tell you that I booked in January a one week Surfcamp and it was really nice with really good classes from Kathryn and Mauro and also some Hawaian surfers, with a nice family atmosphere, so I really recommend it to any surfer wanting a surf trip.
