El Salvador Surfcamps

El Salvador surfcamps, guide & surf lodge accommodation

Loaded with an amazing amount of high quality pointbreaks, El Salvador has been steadily making its presence know in the surfing world as a prime surfing destination. It may be the smallest of Central American countries but don’t let its size mislead you. Located on the Pacific coast, sitting between Guatemala to the west and Honduras to the north and east, the country’s 160 miles of coastline packs quite a punch, with a majority of the waves in the form of long right pointbreaks. Toss in the tropical climate, warm water, lack of crowds, and you’ve got a destination that is begging to be surfed.

But there’s more. The coastline of El Salvador faces almost due south so the exposure to S-SW is exceptionally good. This gives El Salvador a very high ranking with regard to consistency. While March to October is peak season, you’ll see plenty of fun surf all year round.

El Salvador Surfcamps are located in a private gated community directly in front of world class breaks, a short drive down the Pacific Coastal Highway from the harbour town of La Libertad (West coast)  and Las Flores (East coast). The Surfcamps enjoy access great surfspot while organising daily Surfaris to the numerous spots in the area.

West Coast - Sunzal and La Bocana Surfcamp

West Coast - Sunzal and La Bocana Surfcamp

When it comes to surfing, El Salvador is generally known to have two different zones: the La Libertad area of the West Coast and the other area often referred to as the Wild East. The west coast holds a vast amount of quality pointbreaks, the most famous being Punta Roca next to the town of La Libertad, which is just 45 minutes from El Salvador’s International Airport(SAL). Punta Roca is a long wave with several barreling sections and is one of the best righthand points in the world. In addition, this coastline holds a mixture of river mouths and good quality beach breaks.

La Bocana Surfcamp

This small family-run hotel is located at Playa Tunco. It sits right in front of La Bocana, a really good beach break which produces fun rights and lefts, and is just 200 meters from El Sunzal, another long righthand point. The hotel has six beachfront rooms, each with two double beds, cable TV, A/C, private bathroom, and a terrace. There is a restaurant/bar, two small pools, and a mayan sauna. Massages are also available upon request. This hotel provides all the amenities to ensure you have a very comfortable stay in El Salvador.

Sunzal Surfcamp

This extremely charming hotel is located right in front of El Sunzal, the go-to righthand point . The hotel has 11 tastefully decorated rooms designed with the modern traveler in mind. Each room comes with queen size beds, dining room, living room, air-conditioning, and hot water. The hotel provides a high level of service to meet your daily needs and will make sure your stay is comfortable and relaxing. There is a restaurant/bar, swimming pool, and 24 hour security.

The Spots

Punta Roca

This wave begs perfection and is probably one of the best right points in the world. It breaks over a rocky bottom and has lots of barreling sections, so you’re guaranteed to log plenty of tube time. There are a couple of boulders on the outside section and it’s a good idea to wear booties.

Conchalío

One of the better sand-bottom beach breaks in El Salvador. It gets very hollow and likes the high tide.

Sunzal

This is the longest wave in the area can hold some of the biggest swells that strike west coast. This is a fun, open faced wave, great for beginners or advanced surfers and can be upwards of 200mts long. Due to the consistency and above average size, it can be a bit more crowded than the surrounding breaks.

Zonte

This is another right point with some fun carvable sections. It has wind protection from the surrounding mountains. There is also a left on the other side of the river mouth that will provide plenty of excitement.

K59 and K61

These are both right points, with cobblestone bottom and some barreling sections on the inside. They work best in the 4ft plus range and remain relatively uncrowded .

La Bocana

This wave, created by the river mouth of the Rio Grande, offers a left and a right. The left is powerful with a fast take off. It has several barrel sections as the wave heads for the shallows on the inside. As this is the main left in the area there can be some localism at this spot. The right is shorter but also very fast and hollow.

Mizata

This stretch of beach offers a variety of different waves, from A-frame peaks, a river mouth, to a point break and even a Slab. All are within walking distance from one another, and depending on the

conditions, the chances are good that one or more of these waves will be showing its true form. Mizata works well on small to medium size swells.

East Coast - Las Flores Surfcamp

East Coast - Las Flores Surfcamp

Located about three hours south of La Libertad is the surf filled region of El Salvador known as the “Wild East”. This area is full of quality points and is home to Las Flores and Punta Mango, two first class right- handers. Las Flores is a flawless, sand-bottom pointbreak which can see 300m rides. Punta Mango is a cobble stone point with plenty of barrel sections. Due to its more remote status and rugged terrain the East Coast is a lot less traveled, and while it still receives the same swells as the west coast, the crowd factor is not an issue in this area of El Salvador. Most breaks in the area are easy to reach by boat and this is the preferred method of travel.

Las Flores surfcamp

The Hotel is situated on Punta Las Flores which is just 2 1⁄2 hours east from the San Salvador International Airport (SAL). There are stunning views from its cliff top setting and if you’re keen to surf upon your arrival you can be in the water within minutes. The hotel has 5 rooms, all with private bathroom. The rooms come with queen size beds, cable TV and A/C. There is a restaurant/bar and a swimming pool, plus other modern conveniences such as internet and DVD rentals. We can arrange boat trips to the different point breaks, surf lessons, or board rentals. And there is plenty to do for those who don’t surf, like fishing, hiking or canoeing trips. The hotel has private access and 24 hour security.

The Spots

Las Flores

A classic right point break, the wave breaks over a sand bottom and has loads of hollow sections. It’s a super long wave and is good for intermediate to advanced surfers. Tides and currents will be a factor at this break.

Punta Mango

A punching righthander breaking off a cobblestone point, this is a perfect wave for those who want to spend some time in the barrel. The spot is surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery and there is hardly a soul in sight.

La Ventana

A fun little beach break on smaller swells.La Vaca

This wave is similar to Las Flores but not quite as long. You’ll still get barreled. .

El Torro

This is a fast right point for more experienced surfers. The outside section breaks close to some rocks while the inside section peels towards a sandy beach. This wave needs size to get going.

El Bongo

Another ight hand point with a sand bottom. Needs a solid swell.

El Cuco

This break offers slow mushy waves and is great for beginners.
