The old medieval town and busy fishing port of Peniche lies one hour north of Lisbon. A surfers’ paradise, Peniche is a small peninsula dividing the coast between SW and NW, where you will always find the right waves with beach light offshore winds forming hollow waves, regardless of swell or wind direction. Along these two stretches of coast, there are more than 20 breaks for surfers of all levels. The most famous one is Supertubes, one of the best beach breaks in Europe with perfect and powerful lefts. and for life after surf, Peniche also has a good night life - In season, beach bars open 24 hours and there are reggae concerts and raves.

A short drive north of town, Baleal Surfhouse, Resort & School enjoys a perfect location on Baleal Beach. Within walking distance from the beach, the large and bright surfhouse features all kind of facilities, including a swimming pool. Accommodation ranges from dorms at the surfhouse to studio and apartments in the neighbouring. Surf packages for all levels, from total beginners to experienced surfers who want to discover the Peniche’s reputed spots with a local guide.

The Surfcamp

A short drive north of town, Baleal Surfhouse, Resort & School enjoys a perfect location on Baleal Beach, a nice stretch of sand facing due north and closed by the Peniche and Baleal Peninsulas. Within walking distance from the beach, the large and bright surfhouse features a bar-restaurant with terrace, billiard room and games as well as a swimming pool and a beach volley court. 

Accommodation comprises shared rooms with bunk beds at the surfhouse, and private rooms or studios and apartments in Baleal as well as at Baleal Island, in fact a peninsula linked to  the main land by a narrow stretch of sand - a quite unique location ! Packages are defined by the type of accommodation and the level of surf: Surfcamp for beginners-intermediates, and Surfaris for intermediates-experienced surfers.

The Surf

Peniche has been a magnet for surfers for at least two decades, due to the large variety of spots working in different conditions. North swells can be breathtaking on the northern beaches while in South swells or northern winds, the southern beaches offer powerful waves. Along a fifteen kilometer stretch of coast, there are more than 20 breaks for surfers of all levels. such as the famous "Supertubes" perfect tube. Northwards of Peniche, the crowd thins out substantially.

The Location

Ninety kilometers north of Lisbon, Peniche is one of Portugal's busiest fishing harbour. An island until the 12th Century, it is now connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway bordered by wide sandy beaches. Its "Fortaleza" was one of the country's most notorious jails, now an impressive monument against fascism. 

Costa da Prata (Silver Coast)

The region of Peniche and Costa da Prata (Silver Coast) is famous for its miles long pristine beaches and the Berlanga Islands, a tiny rocky archipelago listed as a natural reserve and a favourite destination for divers - in season, daily ferries take visitors from Peniche to the main island. 

Also well worth a visit is the nearby walled town of Obidos. This perfectly preserved mediaeval town is a maze of narrow cobbled streets and small squares lined by churches and lovely whitewashed houses with flower bedecked windows. The town was a leading merchant harbour until the 16th century, when river access to the sea was silted up. Obidos lost importance and its development was halted, the town remaining pretty much the same ever since. Today, the tranquil waters of the Obidos (Arelho) lagoon has become a favourite spot for windsurfers and its river mouth a reputed surf spot.

• Buses leave every hour or so from "Siete Rios" Bus Station in Lisbon
• Take a taxi from the airport to the bus station
• Call the surfcamp before boarding the bus to advise time of arrival in Peniche
