Surf School

The Rip Curl School offers a new concept of coaching surf and bodyboard, based on individual and differentiated tuition for each level: initiation, improvement and competition. The school has a large choice of material; different type of boards (according to level and size); short and full wetsuit (according to season); and different type of cameras for videos analysis (improvement and competition). There is a van as well for guided surf tours to other beaches on the coast. The monitors all have official licenses as surf instructors and lifeguards. The school is sited on the Areaga beach (Bakio), a famous spot venue of several surf competitions.

Surf Spots

At the heart  of the Basque Coast, extending between Biarritz and Bilbao, Bakio is a regional classic with  a large sandy beach and various breaks for both beginners and experienced surfers. A few kilometers from Bakio, lies one of Europe’s finest lefts, Mundaka, a powerful rivermouth break dominated by the village’s church in the picturesque Gernika estuary, a natural area protected by the UNESCO - Mundaka is an annual stop of the WCT Tour. Another regional classics on the coast are Meniakoz, a very big and powerful right, Sopelana, a good spot with left and right beach breaks accessible to all, and Zarautz, a reputed beach break left and right venue of an annual WQS competition. The best season to surf the area is Autumn and Winter, when the swell generated by the Northern Atlantic storms comes in steady and strong, traveling through the Gulf of Biscay and crashing against the sea bottom, which rises abruptly in front of the coast.

The Basque Country

The Basque Country

Flanked by the Atlantic and the Pyrenees mountain ranges, the Basque Country occupies the north-west corner of the Iberian Peninsula, straddling the French border. One of the most developed region in Spain, its inhabitants have nevertheless managed to preserve through the centuries an age-old autochthonous culture which most valuable jewel is its language, Euskera, a pre-Indo European tongue whose mysterious origin has never been established. Euskadi, meaning Basque Country in the native language, is part of the Green Spain. The landscape is formed by a cliff-lined coast with quaint fishing villages and mountainous hinterland covered by green pastures and deep forests, offering a contrasting image to the dry and desert like central Spain.

The most symbolic place of the Basque Country is the old town of Guernika, which used to be place where the General Assembly of Viscaya (Biscay) gather under the famous oak tree know as the Guernika Tree, symbol of the Basque freedom. Guernika is unfortunately also know for the brutal bombing during the Spanish civil war by the Condor Legion - a fighting squadron of the Nazis Luftwaffe, allied to the Franquism. This dramatic event inspired Picasso’s most famous work “Guernika”, a powerful manifest against war and civil suffering.

Bilbao is the industrial, financial and intellectual capital of the Basque Country. One of Spain’s largest city and the country’s major harbour, Bilbao has recently turned into a popular touristic destination through a complete architectural revival featuring Frank Gehry’s striking Guggenheim Museum, Norman Foster's impressive subway system and Santiago Calatrava’s spectacular new airport terminal.

Climate

Atlantic, with mild/wet winters and warm summers.

Hi Jose,

Last year you gave me a great tip by recommending me to go to the Mundaka/Bakio surf camp in Spain. I had a great surfing time and met lots of people which I still meet now! Thanks ;-)

So, for this year, I am considering doing a surfcamp again, but I would like to go to Portugal:

Do you have any recommendations overthere? By preference a camp with people matching my age (34)!
Timing: would be August
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
Cheers,
Ken
