The Basque Country
Flanked by the Atlantic and the Pyrenees mountain ranges, the Basque Country occupies the north-west corner of the Iberian Peninsula, straddling the French border. One of the most developed region in Spain, its inhabitants have nevertheless managed to preserve through the centuries an age-old autochthonous culture which most valuable jewel is its language, Euskera, a pre-Indo European tongue whose mysterious origin has never been established. Euskadi, meaning Basque Country in the native language, is part of the Green Spain. The landscape is formed by a cliff-lined coast with quaint fishing villages and mountainous hinterland covered by green pastures and deep forests, offering a contrasting image to the dry and desert like central Spain.
The most symbolic place of the Basque Country is the old town of Guernika, which used to be place where the General Assembly of Viscaya (Biscay) gather under the famous oak tree know as the Guernika Tree, symbol of the Basque freedom. Guernika is unfortunately also know for the brutal bombing during the Spanish civil war by the Condor Legion - a fighting squadron of the Nazis Luftwaffe, allied to the Franquism. This dramatic event inspired Picasso’s most famous work “Guernika”, a powerful manifest against war and civil suffering.
Bilbao is the industrial, financial and intellectual capital of the Basque Country. One of Spain’s largest city and the country’s major harbour, Bilbao has recently turned into a popular touristic destination through a complete architectural revival featuring Frank Gehry’s striking Guggenheim Museum, Norman Foster's impressive subway system and Santiago Calatrava’s spectacular new airport terminal.

Last year you gave me a great tip by recommending me to go to the Mundaka/Bakio surf camp in Spain. I had a great surfing time and met lots of people which I still meet now! Thanks ;-)
So, for this year, I am considering doing a surfcamp again, but I would like to go to Portugal:
Do you have any recommendations overthere? By preference a camp with people matching my age (34)!
Timing: would be August
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
Cheers,
Ken
