TARIFA kitesurf camp, kite surfing school & accommodation

“The Wind Capital of Europe", Tarifa is also the southernmost point of the Old Continent, looking across the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco and Africa lying only fourteen kilometres away. Tarifa narrow cobble streets are the meeting point of windsurfers, kite surfers and surfers from across Europe, a melting pot with a unique atmosphere where tradition meets vanguard.

There are many restaurants, internet cafes, surfshops and bars in town, displaying video recordings of the day and other radical sports. The Surf Hostel is right in the middle of it, within walking distance of the old town’s nightlife and Los Lances Beach, the kite and wind surfing Mecca. In good wind conditions, it is not unusual to count over 250 kites in the sea and on the beach ! The Kite Surf School is at Los Lances beach and a van will pick you up every morning at the hostal to take you to the spot.

The Surf

The Kite Surf School is on Los Lances and a van will pick you up every morning at the hostal to take you to the spot. Just as windsurfing is a combination between sailing and surfing, kite surfing is a combination between power kite flying and surfing. It is easy to understand why this sport is so popular as the jumps and tricks look spectacular. It also requires much less wind than windsurfing. Within the sport of Kite Surfing there are two main learning stages. These can be broken down into power kite flying skills and board skills. Surfers, snowboarders and kite flyers will have a leading edge when learning kite surfing! The school is affiliated to the Andalusian Sailing Federation. The basic course comprises a total of 12 hours, distributed over five days according to wind and sea conditions.

Kite Surf Spots
Los Lances is the most famous spot, a five kilometre long sandy beach extending from the very town centre! At the end of Los Lances is Valdevaqueros, a quieter spot with huge sand dunes. Further up the coast, Bolonia is another superb spot backed by large sand dunes and the Roman ruins of Baleo Claudia, well worth a visit. These spots are also ideal for the practice of windsurfing.

Surf Spots
Although Tarifa owes its reputation to wind and kite surf, there are also excellent surf spots in the area. Right in town, Tarifa’s Balneario beach is a regional classic with a left and right beach break. The coast extending from Tarifa to Cadiz has several further surf spots, the most famous ones being Caños de Meca, next to Trafalgar lighthouse, and El Palmar.

The Location

An old Moorish settlement of Roman origins, the old walled-in town is dominated by the “Guzman El Bueno” medieval castle. Today, Tarifa narrow cobble streets are the meeting point of windsurfers, kite surfers and surfers from across Europe, a melting pot with a unique atmosphere where tradition meets vanguard. There are many restaurants, internet cafes, surfshops and bars in town, displaying video recordings of the day and other radical sports. The Moskito bar is recommended, where Jorge prepares the best Mojitos and Caipiriñas in town!

A few miles outside town, the Roman ruins of Baleo Claudia in Bolonia, a good kite surf spot as well, are well worht a visit. While in town, hop on one of the fast ferries that cross the strait in about half an hour to Tangier. Tarifa is the gateway to Los Alcornocales Nature Park, Spain's largest cork oak forest and one of the largest in the world. It is also Andalucia's largest wooded area and the best preserved example of the Iberian primeval forest. Tarifa is also ideally located between the glitz and glamour of the Costa del Sol, on the Medtierranean side in the Malaga province, and the wild, solitary beaches of the Costa de la Luz, on the Atlantic in the province of Cadiz.
